Are you ready for your debut at the beach? I am not. Although I am lean, I would still like to look better. Living in San Diego CA provides year round warm weather but not necessarily sunny days We have gloomy days 6 months out of the year due to warm air mixing with cooler ocean temperatures. Typically May, June July, August and September is the peak tourist seasons in San Diego because of more consistent sunny days. Although UV rays put you at risk for skin cancer, specifically malignant melanoma, if you pre treat your skin with a heavy sun block of SPF 12 or above you can decrease the likelihood while spending your weekends having beach fun. It is true, the benefits of sun exposure out weigh the risks of skin cancer as sites in many recent studies.
“Health and economic burdens from insufficient solar UVB irradiance and vitamin D greatly outweigh all known adverse health outcomes. These are the findings from a rigorous study published this week by the Journal Photochemisty and Photobiology. Scientists investigated the annual number of cases and deaths due to cancer, multiple sclerosis, and osteoporotic hip fracture that likely could have been prevented with sufficient vitamin D as well as the number of cases and deaths from skin cancer and melanoma as well as cases of cataracts that likely have been prevented by avoiding excess UV irradiance. Economic burden values were then determined for these results. In addition, UVB irradiance and vitamin D also provide important health benefits in preventing or ameliorating such conditions or diseases as bone diseases and muscle pain, multiple sclerosis, type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, etc.”

I am up in Vancouver, BC and we get our fair share of rain and gloomy days…. more thatn San Diego! You have to just get out and do it, because action is everything. I was just saying to my wife today that I was worried about not being in the best shape of my life anymore and it’s easy to start thinking that you’ll never get it back. I know that just doing something is a step in the right direction.

Yes, you are right! I guess we get spoiled here and as soon as the temp drops below 70F we San Diegans get house bound.
Yes, activity all costs is important as we get older.
Best to you Kunooks!

Don’t forget the UV protective clothing! Surfers have used rash guard shirts for years but it’s just recently that the SPF 150+ protection these shirts provide while you’re in the water has been discovered by the rest of the beach going population.
