I know a couple of guys at the gym who have really messed their backs up squatting and dead lifting.

The key to training legs is to TRAIN YOUR LEGS PROPERLY!

Use good form, full range of motion, slow controlled movements and use a weight that you can lift in a safe manner!

But that goes for working out any body part, just just leg workouts.

I believe if done correctly and methodically, leg strength training can take pressure off your back.
Yes I agree leg training can lead to back pain, if done incorrectly.
I have had back pain from my leg training, but it's usually caused by, improper form, poor flexibilty, no warm-up,
not enough rest in between workouts.
For me and my belief; you can't build a house on sand you need a solid foundation and thats where proper leg training takes place.
